With the high crop ratings in Nebraska the USDA has been predicting record row crop yields for the state, but not all farmers aren’t in agreement. In Monday’s crop progress report the agency rated corn at 74-percent good to excellent, with beans at a 73-percent rating. However, Randolph, Nebraska farmer Mike Korth says his soybeans aren’t as good as a year ago.
The reason is because of the late season pest problems and the lack of direct sunlight during portions of the growing season. As a result he’s predicting just average yields on his farm.
Jim Miller who farms near Belden, Nebraska agrees. He says while the state has high crop ratings for soybeans, the crop it isn’t as good as a year ago.
And so he’s expecting some lower yields on those fields with white mold and just average yields on the rest of his farm.
Both are more optimistic about the corn and say that could be a record, but they’ll know more when the combines start to roll.
