The North Dakota State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams claimed the 2016 Summit League titles at the IPFW Athletics Center Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
It is the fifth league title for the Bison men, and first since 2011, while the women claimed their ninth consecutive team championship.
South Dakota State’s men’s team finished in second, equaling their best finish, with Oral Roberts rounding out the top three teams. The South Dakota women’s team finished runner-up for the third straight season and South Dakota State finished in third.
Two more championships records were broken Saturday, bringing the two-day meet total to five. Teivaskie Lewin of South Dakota broke his own 60-meter hurdles record in a time of 7.79, winning the event for an unprecedented third time. SDSU’s Jazzelena Black broke the triple jump mark (42’2.25″/12.86m) to go with her long jump crown on her way to being named Field Championship MVP. Black’s teammate Jeremiah Ary earned the honor in the men’s field in a tie with NDSU thrower Alex Renner.
IUPUI’s Robert Murphy (men) and South Dakota’s Shanice Cannigan (women) each earned their respective program’s first Track Championship MVP awards. The league’s Newcomer of the Year awards went to Oral Roberts’ Jaden Purnell and South Dakota’s Karina Dufoe.
Don Larson and Stevie Keller were each voted as the league’s coaches of the year in a vote of their peers. For Larson, it is his fourth career honor while Keller has earned the award each of the past two seasons.
