Congress recently approved a short term budget resolution that continues to provide funding for the Commodity Credit Corporation. The move will allow the market facilitation program payments to continue to be distributed. North Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne says while those are needed and appreciated what’s really necessary is for disaster aid to go out to producers.
He says Congress needs to do whatever can be done to make producers whole until their markets are restored.
Watne says budget cuts to the farm bill has lessened its ability to be a viable safety net for producers.
Watne says even if a trade resolution is reached with China, restoring that market to its original value may be lost forever.
