The North Dakota Farm Bureau is backing a measure introduced in the State House to provide truth in labeling, where only meat that comes from a traditional animal may be labeled as meat. Farm Bureau’s Public Policy Director Pete Hanebutt says its critical consumers know the meat they’re buying is real and that must be reflected on the package label.
He says when meat items are purchased, there needs to be a clear definition of what they are.
Hanebutt says other states have or are considering similar laws and their national group, the American Farm Bureau, recently passed policy calling for truth in advertising for traditional meat.
The legislation was heard last week in the North Dakota House Agriculture Committee.
