The USDA’s Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service has withdrawn a proposed biotech regulation. The agency says it will revamp the rule and work with stakeholders. National Corn Grower’s Association Board member Keith Alverson who farms near Chester says they’re pleased with the decision as the rule would have hampered biotech crops.
He says the rule would have adversely impacted new biotech developments and research and stopped growth in the industry.
Alverson says NCGA is looking forward to working with USDA on a good replacement regulation that is science based and is flexible and adaptable to the ongoing biotechnology innovations in the industry.
Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says the USDA needs to take a fresh look at any possible rule and explore policy alternatives with stakeholders in the biotech industry.
