National Corn Grower’s Association Board member Bruce Rohwer who farms near Paullina, Iowa testified in front of the Senate Ag Committee this week talking about the importance of the crop insurance program. Rohwer was asked his concerns regarding comments made by USDA Undersecretary nominee Sam Clovis where he questioned the constitutionality of crop insurance.
The question is will Clovis’s crop insurance comments jeopardize his confirmation as USDA Undersecretary. Rohwer says he’ll leave that up to Senators.
Rohwer says despite comments made about crop insurance, Senate Ag Leaders are supportive of the program and believe it’s a valuable safety net for farmers.
Several ag groups back Clovis’s nomination however there’s disagreement among Senators about Clovis having the necessary background to be undersecretary for research, education and economics.
