Thursday the House passed the Senate’s national biotech labeling bill, establishing a uniform standard for foods containing GMO ingredients. The program will rely on consumers scanning QR codes to get information, rather than an on package label. Chuck Connor, CEO of the National Council of Farm Cooperatives says they’re pleased with the passage as it will preempt state labeling laws including the mandate in Vermont.
He says both the House and Senate recognized the need to stop piecemeal state laws from going into effect and that was the key to the House passing the Senate bill.
Connor says the House passage of the Senate measure is a huge win for agriculture and the American food industry.
The president is expected to sign the measure into law.
