National Council of Farmer Cooperatives President Chuck Connor was pleased with Senate Ag Committee passage this week of the voluntary biotech labeling bill. He’s also confident they’ll be able to convince opponents, many of them Democrats like ranking member Debbie Stabenow to change their mind and vote for the bill on the Senate floor.
He says getting the national legislation passed and signed into law is critical in order to super cede any state regulations such as the one scheduled to go into effect in Vermont this summer.
Connor says the voluntary biotech labeling legislation actually gives consumers a lot of information and is very transparent.
Over 650 groups backed the Biotech Labeling bill sponsored by Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts that’s now headed to the Senate floor. Connor expects a vote on that in the next two weeks.
