Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro is pushing the Office of Management and Budget to finalize a food safety rule on mechanically tenderized beef. She’s concerned mechanically tenderized beef products are more likely to cause foodborne illness and wants them labeled. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall says DeLauro is moving too quickly which could cause unintended consequences.
Woodall says any time an additional label is added, it’s a concern for his group.
DeLauro’s concern is that if the rule isn’t finalized by the end of the year it could be delayed until 2018 or later. Woodall says DeLauro is pushing quickly mainly because of the changeover in the Congress early next year when the Republicans control both houses of Congress.
