NCBA Vice President Says DOJ Investigation Of Cattle Markets Needed

America’s cattle producers are under extreme pressure brought on by difficult cash markets as well as the COVID 19 pandemic. Due to that, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is working to help out those producers. Minnesota Cattleman Don Schiefelbein is Vice President of NCBA. He says they’ve been able to get President Trump to have the U.S. Justice Department investigate the packers to see if there’s any price manipulation occurring.

He says with so few packers operating, there needs to be close scrutinization made to make sure everything is transparent and positive.

Schiefelbein says the smaller cow calf operators are not only facing a difficult market situation but also a backlog of animals from processing plants recently shut down completely or temporarily closed.

He says NCBA has a Marketing group trying to find solutions to the backed up cattle.

He says their Marketing committee is also taking a look at the fed cattle set aside proposal that would pay producers for holding back animals from slaughter for 75 days.
