Tuesday the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 8 to 3 in favor of the U.S. Country of Origin Labeling law. The measure had been challenged by several meat groups including the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall says now that they’ve exhausted their court remedies they’ll turn their attention to the World Trade Organization.
Woodall says should the WTO rule against U.S. COOL not only will the expected retaliation be costly for America’s cattle producers but that will be combined with costs incurred from battling COOL for the past several years.
Canada and Mexico who’ve challenged U.S. COOL at the WTO have promised to retaliate against the United States should the world body find the measure trade distorting.
