The Trump administration will be holding a hearing in December to lay out trade objectives for a bilateral deal with Japan. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall says they’ll be sharing with the administration what they want in the agreement.
He says their biggest concern is making sure the current 38.5 percent tariff on U.S. beef into Japan is brought down or even eliminated.
Woodall says America’s cattle producers have already been losing market share in Japan, even before the recent ratification by most of the countries into the revised Trans Pacific Partnership which doesn’t include the United States.
Woodall says the positives gained in the USMCA should be a help in negotiating with the Japanese on a bilateral agreement.
