National Cattlemen’s Beef Association members are asking federal lawmakers and USDA to limit the definition of “beef” and “meat” to only products from live animals. This is to differentiate real meat from “fake meat” that is lab-grown or a plant-based protein. Minnesota Cattlemen’s Association President Krist Wollum says they are sharing that message while in Washington this week.
He says their position against “fake meat” comes from policy passed at their national convention. Wollum says consumers need to know where their meat comes from.
Wollum says they are also talking with lawmakers about the new farm bill and the need to include funding for a Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccine Bank.
Wollum says their members want a new farm bill passed this year rather than having it extended.
