A new ordinance in San Francisco requires grocery stores to report antibiotic use in the raising of livestock at the cities stores that sell meat to the public. The City Board of Supervisors say the goal of the ordinance is to spark a marketplace shift to antibiotic free meat and poultry. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President Elect and California rancher Kevin Kester says his group is closely monitoring that regulation.
He says NCBA is concerned if that regulation multiples and then moves to other states where it could affect more livestock operations.
Kester says tougher state rules on antibiotic use come into effect this coming January in California.
Kester says the California State Cattlemen’s Association weighed in with state lawmakers when those new rules were approved and signed by the Governor. He says before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors implements their own rules they should research the state law.
