The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is opposing the Opportunities for Fairness in Farming or OFF Act legislation. The measure seeks to reform all checkoff programs including the beef checkoff. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane says the bill originally brought forward by liberal Democrats has now picked up the support of some Republicans.
He says however anti animal agriculture groups are the main impetus behind the measure.
Lane says one major point the OFF Act supporters are missing is that the beef checkoff has the major support of most cattle producers and it is working to do what it’s been designed to do.
Off Act supporters say producers checkoff dollars are being used against them in the form of lobbying for issues they don’t back.
