The chances of the U.S. reaching a bilateral trade deal with Japan anytime soon aren’t likely. That’s according to Colin Woodall Vice President for Government Affairs for the National Cattlemens Beef Association. He says disruptions centering around administration rhetoric over possibly exiting both NAFTA and KORUS,the US South Korean FTA make a new trade deal with Japan soon most unlikely.
He says key appointments at trade positions have yet to be made which makes it difficult to push ahead any trade agreements.
Woodall is hoping the U.S. will remain in KORUS and following that negotiators will then be more likely to work on the bilateral deal with Japan.
Woodall says while the Trump administration seems focused on finding better trade deals, there really isn’t much that can be improved with KORUS as it is now.
