The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association members are holding their convention in Nashville this week. NCBA Vice President and South Dakota Cattle producer and attorney Todd Wilkinson says among their primary concerns is the administration’s plan to eliminate stepped up basis and pass a Transfer Tax as well as the need to make sure cattle markets more competitive and transparent.

He says the rate contained in that Transfer Tax is astronomical and if approved could devastate not only the cattle industry but all of agriculture.

Wilkinson says it’s long past time for results to come out from the Justice Department’ investigation into the cattle packers started two years ago. He also says the recent move by USDA to put forward improved cattle market reporting is something they asked for.

Wilkinson says their attendance so far is outstanding with more than 6,000 people at the convention.
