National Cattlemen’s Beef Association members are optimistic about recent trade developments and will be discussing those at their annual convention this week. President Craig Uden says recent comments by President Trump that he may be open to rejoining the Trans Pacific Partnership if they can get a better deal is positive on the surface. Uden says rejoining the TPP or even forging a bilateral deal with Japan would be positive for U.S. cattle producers.

Uden says trade is critical, not only for the U.S. beef industry but for the entire U.S. economy. He says to achieve that, the Senate needs to approve positions within the U.S. Trade Representative’s office that have been on hold due to politics.

Uden says NCBA members are also encouraged by recent progress with the NAFTA discussions and the addition of two more meetings on the deal.

NCBA members attending their convention this week in Phoenix will talk about trade, the farm bill, immigration and several other issues.
