The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has elected their officer team to lead the organization for 2021 at their recent virtual convention. Kansas Cattleman Jerry Bohn is the new President, Don Schiefelbein of Minnesota is President Elect and Todd Wilkinson of De Smet, South Dakota is Vice President. Wilkinson says they also set policy and one of their top ones is improving cattle market transparency and competitiveness. He says they have a committee working on that.

He says one of the critical steps that must be taken to make cattle markets more competitive is to increase the numbers of small meat processors.

Wilkinson says most of that increase must be with mid level meat processing plants not owned by the Major four meatpackers. He says another important NCBA policy is making sure non-tariff barriers are removed from trade deals.

Wilkinson says getting truth in labeling legislation passed is another important policy so that plant based meats have to go through the same inspection process as meat from animals.
