Cattle groups are differing as to how to approach the labeling issue with beef that is U.S. raised, produced and labeled. While the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association field a petition this week seeking a new rule from the USDA, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has a working group looking at the issue. Ethan Lane is Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for NCBA.
Lane says his group understands why the U.S. Cattlemen’s group has concerns over the labeling issue, that they feel product outside the U.S. is being labeled as U.S. product when it isn’t. He says NCBA wants to know what the problem is and the best way to fix it before asking for a rule.
He doesn’t think this is a backdoor effort by the USCA to get mandatory Country of Origin Labeling reinstated, that it’s more focused at Made in the USA labels.
Lane says NCBA shares USCA’s wishes for clear and truthful labeling going forward.
