The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Health and Human Services department took testimony on proposed dietary guideline recommendations put forward by a committee charged with that task. National Cattlemen Beef Association’s Nutrition Scientist and Registered Dietician Shalene McNeill testified. She says the committee went beyond their scope and tried to put sustainability into the recommendations.
McNeill says anti meat representatives also gave testimonyc so it’s critical those involved in the beef industry submit their comments to USDA and Health and Human Services by the May 8 comment deadline. She says the dietary guideline committee based their conclusions on outdated and weak evidence.
McNeill says science reinforces that current consumption of red meat needs to be within amounts needed to promote good health. She says rather than cutting back, Americans need to be encouraged to eat lean meat with more fruit, vegetables and whole grains.
