Three U.S. Cattle groups including the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, R-CALF and the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association want exports of beef from Brazil to the United States halted.. That was after Brazil failed to report or delayed reporting the development of a case of BSE in the South American Country. NCBA’s Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane says Brazil has failed for several years to follow global safe trading rules.
He says Brazil fresh beef not only needs to be stopped right now but proof will have to be made over the course of several years that Brazil follows world rules when it comes to beef being safe. Lane says if they then follow safe rules, they can be let back into the US..market.
While some cattle groups want stronger global regulations regarding safety, Lane says the O.I.E. or world rules are working just fine.
The OIE requires countries to report within 24 hours any animal disease that could be of international concern for public health emergencies.
