NCBA Backs Processed In The USA For Beef Labeling

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association wants the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service to change the Product of the USA Label to Processed in the USA. The FSIS comment period just closed on that label. NCBA President-Elect and Minnesota Cattle producer Don Schiefelbein says having the label say Processed in the USA is the best way to label beef so consumers know precisely what they’re getting.

He says because U.S. beef is the safest in the world, having Processed in the USA labeled on it reinforces that important message to consumers.

Schiefelbein says the hope is that if FSIS approves their proposal it will make labeling truthful, above board and easy to understand.

South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds opposes having Processed in the USA replace Product of the USA. He says Processed in the USA woefully undermines the purpose of the label in the first place.
