The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association alleges that R-CALF is attacking the beef checkoff. Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall says recent legal action taken by R-CALF asking for an injunction against collections of checkoff funds be expanded to 13 more states is concerning to his group which contracts for the beef checkoff.
He says misinformation likely led to a lawsuit filed by R-CALF in Montana against that state’s beef checkoff.
Woodall says it’s unfortunate that there’s some much time being devoted to debating non consequential issues rather than the major ones the beef industry is dealing with from international trade to electronic logging device, to WOTUS, to the farm bill and the FMD Vaccine Bank as well as tax and fake meat issues.
Woodall says the beef checkoff program carries out necessary demand building programs on behalf of the industry and the recent moves by R-CALF have already weakened it.
