Some large oil refineries in the Western United States including Phillips 66 in California have announced they’re converting their facilities to biofuels. National Biodiesel Board’s CEO Donnell Rehagen isn’t surprised by the move and says the Phillips 66 conversion to renewable diesel was spurred by California law.

He says the conversion the Philips 66 facility is making and the ones being made by the other oil refiners is positive for the biodiesel industry.

Rehagen says California’s low carbon fuel standard along with the recent refinery conversions should help convince national lawmakers to push forward policies that help biofuels.

The Phillips 66 company will be investing $700 million to $800 million in the conversion process to renewable diesel. The company believes the California market for renewable diesel is the largest in the world.
