United States consumers saw a record of biodiesel and renewable diesel in 2016 outpacing the previous record by almost 40 percent. National Biodiesel Board CEO Donnell Rehagen says the close to 3 billion gallons of biodiesel production shows the industry is doing a great job.

He says while the record American Biodiesel production is positive, that’s tempered by rising imports of biodiesel that’s causing America’s producers to lose more than a third of their market.

Rehagen says part of the answer may be in a comprehensive tax package Congress will consider that could include the biodiesel tax credit that expired at the end of last year. He says changing that to a producer’s credit would help with the import problem.

Rehagen says 2.5 billion gallons of domestic biodiesel production would support close to 82,000 U.S. jobs and just under $15 billion in total economic benefits.
