Trade officials from the U.S. and China have been unable to resolve their disagreement over allegations Beijing provided more than $100 billion in illegal government subsidies to its farmers for producing wheat, corn and rice. National Association of Wheat Grower’s President Gordon Stoner says the support price for wheat in China has increased significantly.
He says NAWG wants the U.S. Trade Representative to hold China’s feet to the fire over these illegal subsidies.
Stoner says if the Chinese don’t agree to a resolution, the U.S. should seek retaliatory damages at the WTO.
The WTO dispute settlement body meets this week and the U.S. may ask for an investigation into the illegal subsidies being implemented by the Chinese.
