One of the challenges faced by agricultural groups with the new Trump Administration is normalizing trade with Cuba. National Association of Wheat Growers President Gordon Stoner realizes it may be an uphill battle, but his group will continue to push for that important market opening.

He says the U.S. is in a good position to supply Cuba and having access to that market would come at a critical time, given the status of the depressed farm economy.

A U.S. Grains Council spokeswoman says at one time the U.S. had 60 to 70 percent of the Cuban market, now its zero. Stoner says all American commodity groups would benefit from being able to trade with Cuba.

There are a number of barriers to trading with Cuba. One of the biggest is allowing Cuban buyers of commodities access to credit.
