Last week the United States abstained from a United Nation’s vote on a resolution calling for an end to the Cuban trade embargo. Despite the fact only Congress can end that embargo, many ag groups including the National Association of Wheat Growers think momentum is growing to open Cuba to agricultural exports. NAWG President Gordon Stoner sees that as a glimmer of hope for possibly ending the embargo.
He thinks eventually that market will open for U.S. farmers and there is great potential for selling wheat to Cuba.
Stoner says it will take time to see the effects of what trade with Cuba will mean.
In the past the United States and Israel were the only countries that opposed U.N. resolutions calling for an end to the embargo. Last week not only did the U.S. abstain from voting, so did Israel.
