This week, Canada launched a wide-ranging trade dispute against the United States in the WTO. It challenges the U.S. use of antidumping and anti-subsidy duties. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says Canada’s claims are unfounded and ill advised. National Association of Wheat Grower’s President Gordon Stoner says the Canadian filing just adds tension and uncertainty to the North American Free Trade Agreement renegotiations.
He says he’s not sure exactly what the Canadians are trying to achieve with their WTO challenge.
Stoner says it will likely take a lot of time before the WTO rules on Canada’s recent filing.
Trade Representative Lighthizer says the Canadians claim could lower U.S. confidence that Canada is committed to mutually beneficial trade.
