Last month Japan concluded free trade agreement talks with the European Union. That along with the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans Pacific Partnership will mean Europe, Canada, and Australia will see increases in tariff free export volumes of wheat to Japan. National Association of Wheat Growers President Gordon Stoner is concerned with the resulting loss in market share for America’s wheat producers.
He’s also concerned the Trump administration has said they want bilateral trade agreements rather than FTAs. However, there’s been little or no movement on those deals, which is leaving the U.S. far behind global competitors.
Stoner says if the Trump administration is truly committed to forging bilateral pacts, then they need to make more progress.
Japan currently gets 95 percent of its wheat from the U.S., Canada and Australia.
