Mounting concerns over the farm bill and NAFTA surfaced this week on Capitol Hill for the nation’s wheat producers. National Association of Wheat Growers Interim President Gordon Stoner, says while in Washington he talked to lawmakers about the importance of a successful conclusion to the NAFTA talks. However, he says trade uncertainty has already cost U.S. wheat growers business with Mexico, which is sourcing its wheat from three other countries.
He says Congress wants to hear from U.S. wheat growers so they can take their case to the President for assurances no more harm will be done to NAFTA.
Stoner says the other major concern he’s hearing is making sure crop insurance is protected in the new farm bill.
Stoner expects some adjustments to be made to the farm bill but is hoping lawmakers will make those changes quickly and get the legislation approved. Stoner was recently appointed NAWG Interim President when President David Schemm resigned as he’s being tapped as the State Executive Director for FSA in Kansas.
