Five pork industry groups have come together to form the National Swine Disease Council. They’ve aligned to reduce the risks from foreign animal diseases that can disrupt U.S. pork exports and commerce. Dr. Harry Snelson of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians says the Council is based on a former group that worked to eradicate pseudo rabies in the U.S.
He says the idea for the National Swine Disease Council originally started with producers.
Snelson says they also formed the Council to center on rapid response to diseases that threaten the U.S. pork industry and negatively impact pork producers and their business. This includes newly emerging diseases like African Swine Fever or established diseases like PEDV.
The five organizations that make up the council include the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, the Swine Health Information Center, the North American Meat Institute, the National Pork Producers Council and National Pork Board.
