Leaders of the U.S. pork industry are worried that needed upcoming agreements could be scuttled if Trade Promotion Authority legislation is defeated. NPPC President Randy Spronk says he’s concerned about the current rift on the issue between President Obama on one side and Congressional leaders Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi on the other. He says without TPA, important agreements between the U.S. and European and Pacific nations are at risk.
Spronk says TPA or fast track authority would allow the President to negotiate trade with other countries and have Congress either approve it or deny it without any amendments or delays.
The President wants TPA as it’s part of his trade agenda to significantly increase exports. That could be derailed due to this being an election year and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Ranking member Nancy Pelosi worried about pressure from Unions.
