The National Pork Board is providing a tool to help pork producers prepare for the new Veterinary Feed Directive that goes into effect January 1. The checkoff group worked with Global Vet Link to provide the Find-A-Vet Tool, which is an online list for producers searching for a veterinarian for their operation. Pork Board Senior Vice President of Science and Technology Dr. Dave Pyburn says the new VFD requires pork producers work with a vet, who must prescribe all antibiotics.
He says the National Pork Board’s goal is to help all producers comply with the VFD requirements.
Pyburn says if pork producers don’t have a vet by the end of the year they won’t be able to administer antibiotics to their animals, even those that are sick.
Pyburn says exploring the information on the Antibiotics Resource Center on the pork.org website is a good way to learn more about specific issues and scenarios related to the new regulations.
