Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has proclaimed this week as National Pollinator Week. South Dakota Beekeeper and Honey producer Bret Adee says honey bees are responsible for about a third of the food consumers eat.

He says there are several practices farmers can use to enhance pollinator health.

Adee says other crops that are grown see better yields when honey bees are present.

Adee says another important factor that keeps bees healthy is making sure chemicals are used judiciously and properly.

The USDA notes that Pollinator species play an important role in producing more than 100 crops grown in the United States.
