National Milk Producer Federation leaders have recommended changes to the Dairy Margin Protection Program in the next farm bill. Federation’s Chris Galen says the proposed changes will ensure an effective safety net for the nation’s dairy farmers. He says restoring the feed cost formula to levels proposed in the 2014 farm bill would make it more economically valuable for producers.

He says by adjusting the premiums it will incentivize more producers to take part in the program.

Galen says currently the margin protection program isn’t operating the way it was intended to., and that’s why so few dairy producers are purchasing above the catastrophic level.

Galen says they’re also advising that Congress make margin determinations monthly rather than bi monthly.
