For the second time this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended the signup period for the dairy margin protection insurance program. Dairy farmers now have until June 22 to enroll at their local Farm Service Agency office. Chris Galen with the National Milk Producers Federation says the first extension brought an additional 1,000 dairy farmers into the program.

He says margin protection payouts have been very positive this year and that has encouraged more producers to sign up.

Galen says changes made to MPP following its inception have helped increase program participation and provided a good safety net for dairy farmers.

The new deadline is June 22 and interested producers should enroll at their local county Farm Service Agency office.
