The National Milk Producers Federation has filed a petition with the Food and Drug Administration outlining a labeling solution to the use of dairy terms on non dairy products. It asks the FDA to take prompt enforcement action against misbranded non dairy foods that substitute for and resemble refeRnce standardized dairy foods. Federation’s Alan Bjerga says the FDA hasn’t taken action quick enough against non dairy products that are mislabeled as dairy.

He says dairy’s identity needs to be preserved as a product.

Bjerga says consumers need to be assured that what they’re getting is truthfully labeled.

NMPF’s petition follows a public comment period on labeling which recently closed where the FDA received over 13,000 comments.
