One of the key priorities for the National Milk Producers Federation going into 2017 is getting Congress to pass an immigration reform bill. That may be more of a challenge with the election of Donald Trump as President. His stance prior to the election has not been friendly on immigration. Federation’s Chris Galen says his group hopes to work with the President and help him understand the issue and its importance for agriculture.

He says Trump has indicated his wishes to improve the economy and part of that key for U.S. agriculture is having a reliable and stable workforce that includes immigrant labor.

Galen says what’s positive with the election is that most of the members returning to Congress are already knowledgeable about immigration reform and they’re hoping to work with them to pass a measure.

Galen says two positives with Donald Trump coming in as Chief Executive is that he’s likely to work on getting rid of WOTUS and to help foster tax reform. He says the challenges remain immigration and trade.
