National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson is calling on members of Congress not to attach additional clauses to appropriations bills that would defund Country of Origin Labeling or GIPSA. He expects attacks from lobbyists to try and get rid of COOL and GIPSA.
Johnson says it’s difficult to defeat those attachments once they’ve been made as most of the legislation they’re tied to involve essential programs or needs.
Most of the opposition to COOL and GIPSA have come in the House where some members are concerned about trade retaliation coming from Canada and Mexico on the WTO dispute that’s now in the hands of a panel.
