A Group of close to 50 Senators including Senate Ag Committee leaders are urging the USDA to revise their proposed rule on eligibility requirements in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance or SNAP program. NFU President Roger Johnson says SNAP is important for both consumers and producers.

He says his group supports what the Senators are calling for in revising the rule that will keep retailers and small businesses from being removed from participating in the program.

Johnson says the unintended consequences of the proposed change to the SNAP rule not only keeps retailers and small businesses from participating, it also limits food access for those most needing it.

According to USDA data, over 100,000 small retailers are authorized as SNAP retailers.
