Four Senators led by California’s Dianne Feinstein have introduced the Corn Ethanol Mandate Elimination Act. The measure is approved would remove the conventional biofuel blending requirement from the Renewable Fuel Standard. The National Corn Grower’s Association opposes the bill. President John Linder says this kind of measure has been attempted before without success. He adds that blending ethanol into the fuel supply is one of the most effective ways to lower carbon emissions and combat climate change.
He says this may be an attempt by the Senators to counter recent legislation introduced calling for year round use of E-15.
Linder says the RFS has been an incredibly successful policy thanks to the innovation and contributions of corn farmers. And to throw it out just when it’s benefitting the environment, helping combat climate change and bringing needed economic return to agriculture doesn’t make sense.
Linder says that the carbon intensity of corn based ethanol has declined 23 percent since 2005.
