National Biodiesel Board leaders are calling on EPA to reconsider their recent decision allowing Argentinian biodiesel imports into the United States under the Renewable Fuel Standard. NBB’s Director of Federal Affairs Anne Steckel says if EPA allows this to go forward it will allow a foreign product to meet sustainability requirements under the RFS without proving they’ve met those requirements.
Steckel says because the approach Argentina uses to certify its biodiesel is untraceable there’s no guarantee they meet the same standards U.S. biodiesel producers have to meet under the RFS.
Steckel says her group’s request is reasonable in light of the fact that the U.S. biodiesel industry is in a state of crisis right now as a result of EPA’s continued delays in finalizing RFS volumes.
