The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture is calling on U.S. Senators to pass a biotech labeling bill to preempt state regulations such as Vermont’s law set to go into effect July 1st. NASDA President and Nebraska State Agriculture Director Greg Ibach says the preemption is needed to prevent added cost and confusion for consumers and manufacturers.

He says whatever kind of labeling compromise the Senators come up needs to be clear and transparent.

Ibach says the federal biotech labeling standard must also better define what must be labeled as a biotech product.

Ibach says time is running out as Senators have only two weeks to act before the Vermont state law goes into effect. He says Senate leaders are working on some type of compromise between a voluntary and mandatory program.
