High levels of mycotoxins have been showing up in corn across the country and in South Dakota. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Ryan Samuel says pork producers need to monitor their feed for mycotoxins and keep it out the swine ration.
He says if producers notice pigs aren’t eating normally they may have ingested mycotoxin contaminated feed. Samuel adds if their growth rate slows down that may be another sign.
Samuel says livestock producers with herd health problems should check with the local vet or contact specialists at SDSU. There is also information on Igrow.org.
Corn harvest samples collected across the U.S. have shown an average of 7.0 mycotoxins per sample which is 3.9 mycotoxins more on average than what was seen in 2017.
