A mountain lion was shot Sunday in Knox County, Nebraska near Lewis and Clark Lake. Tom Welstead is the Northeast District Manager for the Wildlife Division of Nebraska Game and Parks. He says the mountain lion was shot by a man with a permit to do so in an area he says is a typical habitat for the animal.

Welstead says there have been more sightings of mountain lions in this area, but the population is hard to track.

He says the Prairie Unit, which includes northeast Nebraska, has a year-long permit for mountain lions that closes at the end of the year. All other units are currently closed.
