The Mount Marty College volleyball program’s new head coach is Frank Hebenstreit.

Hebenstreit will take over the reins from Candice Climer whose resignation is effective May 31, 2015.

Hebenstreit, of Pierce, Nebraska, will be a new face to collegiate athletics, but not the sport of volleyball. He was the head volleyball coach at Norfolk High School in Norfolk, Nebraska for 18 years and coached as an assistant 6 years prior to that. During his tenure as the Head Coach at Norfolk High School he took a program that was at the very bottom and had only 3 winning seasons in school history, and never a Conference Championship, to powerhouse status. The NHS program saw 6 Conference Championships (including 5 consecutive), 6 State Tournament appearances with the Final 4 of State on 4 occasions, the rare feat of a non-Metro/Lincoln team reaching the Finals in Class A, 6 District Championships, 9 All-State players, 10 times in the State Final Top 10, and at one point 6 consecutive appearances. While Hebenstreit was head of the NHS program over 40 players were offered college level play.  Those collegiate players included some that went on to be All-Conference, school record holders, All-Americans, even a DI National Champion.

Mount Marty College Athletic Director, Chuck Iverson, is thrilled to see Hebenstreit be named as the new head coach.  “Frank is going to be a great addition to our program that has seen many improvements over the last few seasons.  He’s got the experience we need and the winning style to really catapult this program.  He has been on campus, met with the players, and has been participating in practices and it is all clicking in the right ways.  We are lucky to have him.”

Excited about the opportunity, Hebenstreit stated, “Throughout my coaching career I have always had a great passion and love for not only the game of volleyball, but developing young athletes.  I believe the athletic arena, and particularly in team sports, is a great opportunity to learn and develop many character qualities for personal growth.  I love the game of volleyball and its intricacies, but I have always viewed myself less of a volleyball coach, and more of a people coach.  I feel honored to be the volleyball coach for MMC, and as I have gotten to know the athletes more I am excited for the possibilities we might achieve.”

Hebenstreit has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Urban Studies from the University Nebraska Omaha and a Master of Science Degree in Special Education from the University Nebraska Omaha.
