Peak season for West Nile Virus is still ahead, and the region is already experiencing a large population of mosquitoes.  South Dakota state epidemiologist, Dr. Lon Kightlinger says that West Nile is a large problem in the region…

People at higher risk of the disease are those over 50, pregnant women, transplant patients, those with high blood pressure, and anyone with a history of alcohol abuse…

Kightlinger says protection against mosquitoes is as simple as using bug repellents and wearing long sleeves and pants in the evening in addition to limiting time outdoors from dusk to midnight, and getting rid of any standing water where mosquitoes like to breed.
