A pair of Morningside players are among the honorees this week as top baseball and softball performers in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
Baseball:
Pitcher – Cody Selig, Morningside College
Morningside’s Cody Selig is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports pitcher-of-the-week. Selig, a sophomore from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, tossed 6.1 innings of no-hit baseball in the Mustangs’ 6-1 win against Dordt. Selig struck out eight batters to raise his season’s total to 62 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched. The Mustangs are 35-12 overall and 11-5 in league play.
Player – Cole Gray, Midland University (Outfield)
Midland’s Cole Gray is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports baseball player-of-the-week. Gray, a junior from Ontario, California, paced the Midland offense to a 4-0 weekend on the road, vaulting the Warriors into first place in the GPAC. He hit .714 (10-for-14) with five extra-base hits, six runs and 11 RBI. Gray is batting .490 (25-for-51) over a stretch of 15 games in April and extended his hitting streak to 10 straight contests. The Warriors are 33-15-1 overall and 12-4 in league play.
Softball:
Pitcher – Rachel Henks, Morningside College
Morningside’s Rachel Henks is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports pitcher-of-the-week. Henks, a junior from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, lost a bid for a no-hitter on an infield single with two outs in the top of the seventh inning in her one-hit shutout against College of Saint Mary. Henks struck out 12 batters in the contest after she had fanned three of the five batters she faced while picking up her fifth save of the season in the opener. She has allowed only one run and 11 hits in 27.1 innings over her last four starts. The 14th-ranked Mustangs are 38-7 overall and 17-2 in GPAC play.
Player – Corrin Ziepke, Hastings College (Infielder)
Corrin Ziepke of Hastings is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports softball player-of-the-week. Ziepke, a sophomore from Omaha, Nebraska, went 5-for-8 (.625) with three RBIs and two doubles. She continues to swing the bat well this season as she is averaging .438 with 11 HRs and 45 RBIs while slugging .750. The Broncos are 32-16 overall and 9-7 in GPAC play.
